Thomas J. Norman, Ph.D.

Thomas J. Norman, Ph.D., is a tenured full professor of management at California State University, Dominguez Hills, and the author of the textbooks Compensation and Management. He writes the More Capable series on management in the AI transition, founded the CSUDH Innovation Incubator, coaches leaders and teams, and helps organizations adopt AI through Superior AI Consulting.

Thomas J. Norman, Ph.D., is a tenured full professor of management at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where he teaches management, human resources, compensation, and labor relations. He has served as department chair and acting associate dean, represented CSUDH in the Academic Senate of the California State University from 2014 to 2026, and served on the CSU's systemwide Generative AI Committee (Subcommittee on Security, Privacy, and Procurement). He is the faculty founder and interim faculty director of the CSUDH Innovation Incubator and co-founded the CSU Chancellor's Office Job Shadow program. He is the author of Compensation: Rewarding and Retaining Talent (California Edition) and Management: Optimizing Talent for Organizational Effectiveness, both built around his DART model, and of Judgment Call, the first book in the More Capable series. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management and an A.B. from Harvard University.

He is the author of Compensation: Rewarding and Retaining Talent (California Edition) and Management: Optimizing Talent for Organizational Effectiveness, both organized around his DART model, as well as Outsourcing Human Resource Activities and, with Donald Baack, The Five Functions of Effective Management. His trade series, More Capable, begins with Judgment Call and Lead What Lasts and examines the manager's job in the AI transition. He also writes the newsletters Dr. Norman's Management Memes and The OLE Lab Notebook and hosts the interview series Off the Talking Points.

Before joining the academy, he held management roles at Procter & Gamble, US Bancorp, Cargill, Sun Microsystems, and Wells Fargo. He is the faculty founder and interim faculty director of the CSUDH Innovation Incubator, where he has mentored more than 40 ventures, co-founded the CSU Chancellor's Office Job Shadow program, and leads the Organizational Leadership Effectiveness Lab. A Gallup Certified CliftonStrengths Coach, certified in Stanford's Designing Your Life, and a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), he coaches executives and teams and leads Superior AI Consulting, which helps organizations put AI to work.

He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Human Resources and Industrial Relations from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management and an A.B. from Harvard University. His honors include CSUDH's Outstanding Professor of the Year Award and its Excellence in Service Award. A past president of the Rotary Club of San Pedro, he lives in San Pedro, California, with his wife, Sherri; they have three children.
